Isobutyl-acetate (Isobutylacetate), also known as isobutyl-acetate, is the esterification product of acetic acid and 2 butanol, a water-white liquid with soft fruit ester flavor, slightly soluble in water, miscible in ethanol and ether, miscible with a variety of organic solvents such as alcohols, ethers and hydrocarbons, mainly used as diluent for nitro paint and perchloroethylen e paint, solvent for nitrocellulos e and lacquer, but also as an alternative solvent for acetate and methyl isobutyl-ketone.
It is also used as an alternative solvent for butyl acetate and methyl isobutyl-ketone, and as a component of fragrance agent, diluent of plastic printing paste, extractant of pharmaceutical industry, etc. It is similar to n-butyl-acetate and isobutyl-acetate in solubility, and can be used as a solvent for nitrocellulos e lacquer, acrylic lacquer, polyurethane lacquer, etc.
These lacquers can be used as aircraft wing coatings, artificial leather coatings, automotive coatings, etc. It can widely replace n-butyl-acetate and isobutyl-acetate in paint formulations. In metal flash lacquer, sec-butyl-acetate can be used to dissolve cellulose acetate butyrate to make 15%-20% solution.
